THE
PANJI SEMIRANG DANCE
Panji
Semirang Dance is a solo-dance that can be danced by either a man
or a woman, but is usually danced by a woman. It is based on the
Panji story and describes how Galuh Candrakirana,who has been separated
from her lover many times, is still in search of him. The story
is as follows. Ga1uh Candrakirana, daughter of the king of Daha,
has long been engaged to Panji, son of the king of janggala. But
before the marriage of the two lovers can take place, they have
to be separated because of obstacles which have come their way.
Galuh, faithful to her beloved husband-to-be, with the help of the
gods disguises herself as a handsome and porwerful warrior and changes
her name into Panji Semirang. In the end she finds Panji, her beloved.
The
Panji Semirang dance describes how Panji Semirang is preparing herself
to look for her beloved. As she may have to fight, the dance also
shows how figorously she practices her military skill.
THE
FISHERMAN DANCE
The
Fisherman Dance is a modern dance, created in 1960 by Ketut Merdana,
a choreographer from Singaraja. The Fisherman Dance describes fishermen
looking for fish for their livelihood. The dance can be danced by
women or a combination of one man and several women.
It
Starts With a dance imitating the movements of fishermen rowing
their boat to the sea and throwing out their nets. Sometimes the
dance shows one of the fishermen having an accident. After catching
fish as they row, the fishermen go home carrying them the fish they
have caught.
THE
WEAVER DANCE
The
Weaver Dance is also a modern dance, created by two choreographers,
Nyoman Rider and Wayan Likes about 1957. The background of the dance
is also new because it describes bow women from the village weave
their cloth with their traditional and very simple implements.
The dance starts with the spinning of thread, the arranging of the
thread on the loom and finally the weaving itself. Some of the dance-movements
are still based on classical or traditional movements, but here
and there new and realistic movements shown in the spinning of the
thread and the weaving.
THE
PEASANT DANCE
The
Peasant Dance was created by Wayan Beratha a composer from Denpasar,
about 1957. It is danced by women only or one man and several women.
The Peasant, Dance, which can be danced by three, four or five dancers,
has one person playing the part of a man, the others all women.
The dance begins with the man carrying his hoe and working in his
ricefield by himself. The man having hoed the rice-field, the women
come to plant the seeds. When the rice is ripe, the woman dancers
pick it, and then go home together carrying the fruit of their labour.
